Conventional Life Estate

A conventional life estate is an estate created by deed or will. It is created by the express act of the grantor. There are two types of conventional life estates depending on the person whose life limits the duration of the estate. They are either for one’s own life or during the life of another person. When it is during the life of another person they are called “estates per autre vie” and the person whose lifetime measures its duration is the “cestui que vie.”
